'Lose your cool and lose your chips': poker tips for beginners

Play poker for the first time and you can expect a baptism of fire. Your opponents will show no mercy and if you fall into the traps that many beginners succumb to, then expect to lose money until you learn to look after yourself.

Learn the game

It sounds obvious but the first thing you must do before playing poker is learn the rules. It's easy to just try and wing it with online poker, as the automated system will often do everything for you, but to truly master the game you have to learn its intricacies.

Avoid playing late at night

By late at night we mean don't get in from a rather merry trip to the pub and log on to your online account. Playing drunk, tired or not in the right frame of mind for whatever reason can severely hamper your progress. You become reckless and will inevitably regret your late night games the next morning when you check your bank balance.

Don't stay in a hand for the sake of it

Thinking that you've already put so much into the pot that you may as well see it through is a common mistake. The money you've already added to the pot is not yours and throwing more money at it isn't going to ensure you get it back. If you haven't got the cards, fold and get out of there before you lose any more cash. At times like these it's better to cut your losses rather than chase the pot.

4. Fold more than you play

You don't have to play every hand, in fact when you're starting out it's better to fold more than you play. The more you play usually means you lose more when you're a beginner, so don't play just so you are part of the game.

You have to get the balance right as of course you need to be in hands to learn the game, but fold more, sit back and try and learn from your opponents' decisions.

Don't bluff for the sake of it

When you think of poker, you think of the audacious bluff. But bluffing is only a very small part of the game and beginners often fall into the trap of bluffing all the time because they think that's what poker's all about. Bluffs only work in certain hands and against certain players so learn when to bluff, before you learn how to bluff.

Concentrate

When you are taking a break, when you are pouring a drink, when you are playing a hand, when you are sitting one out and when you are shuffling the pack, you must be studying your opponents.

Look for tells as people play and of course keep an eye on the cards as they should inform your next move. Pay attention at all times and you might just see something that gives you the upper hand.

Know your level

The sensible option is to start playing at a low level so that you can learn while losing very little money. If you start doing well then by all means step up to a more expensive game but remember, the bigger the pot, the better your opponents.
